I have a 328i 1997: the check engine light came on a few days ago. What does it really mean? The owners manual says it's something to do with emission gear and needs to be checked by dealer...immediately. What triggers the light to come on? Is it milage? something in the fuel system?

Is your gas cap fully closed? I had my gas cap on 3/4th's of the way and my check engine light came on.

Check this and if this does not work then go to Autozone and ask them to pull the codes.

Good suggestion, just another bit of information I have..

I changed my o2 Sensor in my exhaust and eliminated the check engine light in my 95 325iC.

Its an inexpensive part (mine was anyway).

Good luck hope you find the problem.

Autozone will run the codes.... IF the tech can find the computer-connection port. On a 328, where is the connection port? Engine bay? under the dash? I've looked around but cannot find something obvious to connect to. The Autozone connection was a small trapazoid-shaped plug.

The OBDII connection on a 328 is under the dash, near the hood release lever.

if you have a pre-1996 E36....
1. turn the ignition on (not the engine, just the ignition)
2. wait for the dash lights to come on
3. quickly press and release-all the way up the gas pedal 5 times and look at the "Check Engine Light"
4. It will flash several times, like morse code, and will tell you 4 numbers, all ranging between 1 and 4 (for ex. 1134)
5.these numbers are code for what is wrong specifically with the engine and car.

Went to AdvancedAuto and they ran the codes. The computer port is under dash near hood release. (328i...'97). The cover plate comes undone with the twist of a slotted fixture. Check engine light may be linked to gas cap, this time. Clerk/tech at AdvancedAuto reset the stuff and the light is now off. This forum is a GREAT place to get info. Thanks!
