I have an OBD1 325is and have already read my fault codes using the pedal method and would like to reset it. But, I have not gotten the code 1000. I keep getting code 1221 which is my O2 sensor over and over again. I would say at least 150 times. Is this normal?

from my understanding once all the codes have been displayed code 1000 should appear and I should be able to reset my DME. But again, it just displays 1221 over and over again. Do i just need to wait until it stops displaying it and gives code 1000? Or do i need to replace my O2 sensor before it will give code 1000?

I know if you use a scan tool, it will continue to give you the 02 code (if the sensor really is broken) until you replace the sensor. If you reset, then it will just give you the code again later. However, I am not too familiar with the pedal method, beacuse I have been blessed with a BMW mechanic as a friend. Any way, the O2 sensor isn't a big deal to replace, go ahead and do it.

Hey man Just read your post, do not have a solution for you, however can you tell me what this pedal method is for readin the codes as i ahve tried this over and over again and does not seem to be working.

My car would repeat the codes over and over like yours. After a few times of the 1221 reading, I manually reset by holding the pedal down for 10secs...But replace the sensor and after 5 minutes of driving the check engine light will go off permantely. So basically it will reset itself once the problem is fixed..

This is the thing, I have checked the voltage of the O2 sensor when at operating temp and it is working fine and giving proper voltage. The check engine light was on for about a day, then it turned off sometime the next day in the afternoon. I no longer have the light on in the dash, but i know the codes are stored on my DME from when it occured. I have to get my car smogged later this month and I can't have that code on my DME or I will fail smog. So, I would like to reset my DME, but can't because I never get the code 1000, just 1221 over and over again. I've tried to reset by holding the pedal down, but my dash still flashes 1221 regardless. What am I doing wrong here?

As of now, I think my best bet is to just replace the sensor and hope for th best. What do you all think?

Couple of days ago I needed to get my E36 smogged so I went and failed it. The cause was a bad O2 sensor. Yesterday I changed O2 and passed the smog wit no prob and "check engine" disappeared. If I was you I would just change the O2 and save you the trouble.

I have replaced my O2 sensor and i am still gettting the 1221 code repeatedly. Any ideas?
