"Check Engine" Flashes on and Off

Hello
on my 1992 E36 318i the "Check Engine" Light occassionally comes on and flashes, especially at high RPM- the longest the lights stays on is maybe 5 min and turns off- it often comes on when i shift gears
it is usually not on when the car is initially started (almost never) - but seems to find itself on and off several times during my daily journies
what does this indicate?

Thats weird man, never heard of an erratic check light like that, Ussually the light wont turn off unless its reset.

itcould be anything... and yes it will turn off by itself if the problem is addressed... matenence lights will not unless reset... try and catch it when its on and get the codes read, thats all i can say...

It's called a misfire people. the check engine light will flash when the car is actually misfiring

Chaos.... get your codes read. This may be related to your other post about dimming lights. If this still occurs after you've resolved your alternator/battery issue then look into the misfire/engine timing issues.
