Check Coolant Light

Hi Guys,

I've spent today messing with my car to the point where i almost killed it! the check light appears everytime i start the engine, the obc read "check coolant level" "refer to owners manual" anyway, the coolant level is fine, so i fgiured it must be the sensor, i replaced the sensor, and guess what it still says the same god damn thing, does anyone else know what to check?

When does it say it.. in the morning.. when its cooler... or after warm up?.... kinda important....

your coolant level sensor is broken. So is mine. Ignore it. If your car starts warming up faster than usual or if your engine temp goes past the middle, then check your coolant level. I always keep a gallon of coolant in my trunk. Force of habit.

I doubt the sensor is that expensive and I'm sure it's easy to DIY.


But if you read what he wrote, he has already replaced the sensor....

I have the same message every once in a while, it could go a few weeks with out coming on. I had it checked out and they said it was a sensor and that it did not matter. Since you have replaced the sensor I am not sure if there is a way to reset it or not. Check with a bmw mechanic and see what they say.

You might need to get the coolant flushed because sometimes bubbles form in the coolant and that can cause the sensor to go off.

if you put a new senosr in and that is the problem the light should automatically go off there is no resetting required. did you check the wires and the connector for the sensor. if the sensor was leaking it will run down the wires and sometime casue them to get a little corroded and since the sensor works off of resistance then the added resistance fomr the corrosion could turn on the light.

I changed the coolant sensor and to my delight it was defective.

The original was corroded inside and the reed relay was detached. It was an original part from 1992 by TRW. As you can see from the attached photo the corrosion entered the area where the reed relay is and ate the connections hence no circuit. If yours is bad change it....

I ordered mine through my local autoparts store, who buys from altrom.com and they are OEM suppliers although they have their own part numbers.
