I got a new starter, and installed it, however, the soleniod was broken on it, and they sent me a new one, i installed it and everything worked fine, but the charging system light came on after putting in the starter. I drove it, and the car was only running off of the battery, so it died and then i replaced the alternator. The light was still on, so i took it to advance auto parts and they tested my shit and said that the new alternator was putting out 14.2 amps (which is correct for a low battery) and 11.85 volts, and that the battery was good. wtf?
(i charged the battery overnight with a 6amp charger and its still on)
Look for lose/broken connections. I am sorry; that is all I have for now. Good luck.
Edit: actually, sometimes th bulb itself -- yes, the bulb tht illuminates th chrge system light -- may have gone bad, and it would affect performance as you mention, because it is part of the circuit.

i just took it back, the battery is good... but there isnt 13.5-14.5 volts when the car is running, indicating a bad alternator... but what are the chances of 1 bad starter and 1 bad alternator?

They say the new alternator is only putting out 11.85v?? That ain't right. It should put out 14v and at least 45 amps to charge the battery. Put the old alternator back in and have them test it again with the old alternator in there. If it reads the same thing give 'em their alternator back. I don't have a lot of faith in rebuilt parts from Advance Auto anyway. The chances are 50/50 the part they hand you is gonna be defective.
Are all the lights and gizmoes working in the car? Just the charge light is on?
the reason i returned the starter was because the solenid was not pulling out... i put that in then the alternator started to act up. now i replaced the new alternator with another one, the solenoid is not pulling out again. they go back and fourth... sometimes the solenoid pulls out and the alternator works and sometimes the alternator works and the solenoid doesnt pull out. wtf?
