| changing starter on a 4 cylinder I have a 1996 318is (thats 4 cylinder). I bought a new starter for like 190 or so from BavAuto, hoping/thinking I could get it changed with some help using the Bentley Manual instructions. This was not the case. Help!
Bentley Service Manual instructions:
1.) Disconnect battery
2.) Remove guide tube for oil dipstick.
3.) Raise vehicle.
4.) Disconnect wiring from starter.
5.) Remove top and bottom starter bolts. Bottom bolt must be removed from below car. Remove starter support bracket if applicable.
6.) Pull starter downward until solenoid is at top, then remove from car.
7.) Check starter pinion gear and flywheel teeth for damage.
8.) Installation is reverse of removal.
Okay, so I got to about Step #5 and had problems. I can't get to either of the bolts. I can FEEL the bolt closer to the driver side of the car, but not the bolt closer to the passenger side. Also, it would have been miserable trying to get my hand in there with a tool of some sort to try and remove it.
Is there another way or a trick to getting these off? Is there a compartment or a door or something from inside the dash I don't know about that would make the starter more accessible?
Have any of you guys changed one of these before? Any comments or tips are greatly appreciated as I will be resorting to paying tons and going to the dealership for help.
Thanks |
