Center Console Lights

i have a 98 328 manual and latley the center console with the fan ajustments on has started to go off and on by its self ? the cd player still plays and the bottom console still works and stays on at all times but you can here the fans shutting down and then back on again ? sometimes there is a faint smell like electric burning and when the fans are set to 16 it blows out hot air ?? any help would be great thanks in advance

i'd pull the unit out and check the wiring to make sure there isnt any shortages somewhere.
