Recently I installed some racing exhaust manifolds on my 98 328i. This set didn't include a place for the auxilliary exhaust fan (is that what it is called?), so I disconnected it electrically because the amount of noise it made on cold startup and that it was no longer serving a purpose. Since then I have had the check engine light on and just recently read the codes. P1421 is catalyst damage. Does that mean I ruined the cat by disconnecting that fan? Or did it just fail on its own? The other is P1423 which is EGI diagnostic failure or something of the sort. What does that mean? Is this fan absolutey necessary to maintain the cat and exhaust system? I really have a lot of questions about this and would appreciate any help I could get. I have talked to service people at BMW dealerships and they are of no help of course. They don't seem to know much about this fan or don't want to tell me anything without me bringing it in and paying out the ass for their services. Also, I would like to know if anyone knows a good source for the M3 evo engine, and what peripheral equipment I would need to install it in my car. But PLEASE PLEASE someone answer my questions about this stinkin fan!

I have both of those codes right now too. I'm sure how to fix them though.
