I have a sneaking suspicion that mine are shot. Well, more than just a suspicion. When Igot my tires rotated and balanced I looked under the car and one of them was charred on the header side. I need to get my car inspected and I fear I may fail the emissions test because of it. So, does anyone know a good place to get new cats? Does anyone know anything about high-flow or performance cats and their legalities? Does anyone know why I'm wearing women's underwear? Who's that standing behind Desmo? A clown? A circus midget?
But really, anyone have any info on catalytic converters?
So I did some looking around. Looks like Cats run in the 400 - 500 $ range. That's not including the O2 sensors that run in the 120+ plus range (there's a total of three that I could see. One before each cat, and one where the headers meet the block).
if you dont have to change the O2's then i suggest dont. they are expensive enough as it is and if they aint broke dont fix em' .. as for your cats all i can suggest is maybe get them changed if your absolutly sure they are garbage. im not sure what the emmisions standards are like in the states but here in canada you have to do a certain amount of work (dollar wise) then emmisions test again to pass. its basically a govenment cash grab but i know if you keep the receipts for the cats , it should more than cover the cost of what is required here in Toronto. either way good luck with it GD and when exactly do you have to go for your test?
I'm due this month for the emissions test. I'm going to wait and see how it goes. If I pass, then I won't worry about it. But if I fail, then it's a different story. You make a good point about the O2 sensors, but I figure if I change them I'll know for sure that they are working correctly, and possibly gain in the gas efficency. Sometimes under hard acceleration I smell sulfur, so somthing aint kosher under there.
no problem sir. all i can truely say is take your car to a "trusted mechanic" he will tell you exactly is wrong instead of giving you a bunch of bullshit about how everything needs to be replaced.
good luck
Alot of times if your O2 sensors are bad, and you drive it around for a while like that the Very rich mixture you get when the O2 sensors are malfunctioning will take out the catalytic convertor with it...
Happened to me, went to Florida with bad O2 sensors, came back with bad O2 sensors and Cats.
Thanks for all the info guys! This helps me out a lot too. I'm gonna try the O2 sensors first...<cross my fingers>
