carfax won't always tell you these kinds of things, mainly just major incidents, but it was probably just owned by someone who didn't take pride in bmws and let it ware just like it was any kind of car, glad to know your not that kind of person and want to keep it up tho , i try to keep everything onmine up to par.

I don't trust car-fax at all.

Before I purchased my BMW a month ago I was orginally looking into purchasing an SUV or 4x4. I ended up signing the papers for a 2001 Ford 150 4x4, hella nice ride or I thought it was......

The vehicle came from ALL-STAR FORD in Olympia, WA

My mechanic went through it and found out the following problems:

-2 doors on the right had been replaced
-1 door on the right had been replaced
-Hood had been replaced
-Transmission had a leak
-possible front pump

A $19,000 truck, and for $90 dollars my mechanic saved my ass in the long-run. I was able to get out of the loan because I put a clause in the contract that I signed; "per mechanics approval" My mechanic didn't approve the contract so it was voided.

Before I signed the papers for the car, I told the dealership that I would only sign the papers if they would put a clause in.

"Per mechanic's approval"

So about 3-4 days later I spent about $90 to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle. I know it's a pain to spend $90 dollars a pop on every vehicle you "think" about purchasing, but its worth it. I was also looking at a VW a few years ago. My mechanic found $6,000 worth of things wrong with it.

-It had red/green coolant mixed together
-Had been rear ended and had rear ended someone
-Had coolant in the oil

Most "Major" dealerships are easy to work with when dealing with lemon cars. However, you can't say the same with a lot of the smaller dealerships.

Can't you take it to a mechanic to get it checked out before signing any papers? I heard most dealers allow you to do this.

Carfax will show accidents that are on file:
ie: accidents reported to PD's and insurance companies.

The car has been in a bender and the owner decides its best not to report and pay for the repair himself, it will not be on file w/ carfax.

Im leary of their buyback guarentee due to this..... I doubt they will offer the buyer protection if you discover the car has been hit, but not reported to the proper agencies.

Yes "MOST" dealerships allow you to take the car off the lot to your mechanic before signing papers. I was in a tough situation. My car broke down and I commute about 25 miles to work. My mechanic couldn't look at it until 3 days later. So I signed papers and drove it for 4 days and took it back.

With the BMW I bought, a guy came in while I was filling out papers wanting to buy it. He even asked me if I would look at a different car because he wanted it, cause he thought that the 96' model was the best year for bmw. (just probably started another thread, for saying that...)

So signing papers before it goes to your mechanic guarantees that you'll get the car, and you protect yourself with the clause. So it works either way.
