oh shit forgot to sign off my friends name, okay well heres the story!!! so last night my car was driving but kind of weird, we get to where we are going and i notice my abs light come on, then 1 min later check engine light and then like 3 more... i was like what the hell, then i notice all my lights dimming, and my car barely moving even with the gas to the floor. well it dies a few min later and i had to leave it there, come back the next day wont start, even after jumps itll only run for about 5 min, we get it looked at its the alternator (i just replaced this last year which is weird that it would be go out again but they saw alternator!) so the place we took it too says that itll cost 700$ to buy another alternator hahaha, i laughed and laughed, so fro tehre i didnt listen to a thing they said, they said that i would have to leave my car there till next thursday and they would send my alternator away to be rebuilt for 580$.. i was like what? so i took my car home after they charged it up enough, so now i am stuck with a car that cant produce energy to drive so i have to replace the alternator. heres my questions, how much should a new alternator cost? where should i look to get one Online or chain stores? and should i replace the blet that drives the alternator it looks like its pretty strecthed and needs it im thinking that might be why my alternator isnt charing as much too becuase its not spinning like it should! well any help would be great! i hope to get my car up and running soon! thanks in advance!
at most alternator is like $170 with trade in of core. (old alt.)
IF YOU CAN CHANGE A BELT, DO THIS YOURSELF!!!! ive done it 5 times in the last 6 months.... long story, but i can now do it in the dark. its removing a belt, pulling it off, putting the new one on.
tell the repair guys to F@*K off, thats the worst business i have heard of in a while.
go to NAPA, anletnators are no more than $200 w/tax inc. are BOSCH factory alternators, and are LIFETIME GUARANTEED!!!! trust me, i have gone through a few. dont worry though, the parts are good, my car just kept killing them. thats part of why i dropped in a new engine.
if u have questions, PM me anytime. i will help any way i can, but DO NOT take it out, its VERY easy to do at home! it takes about 30 minutes and saves $$$$
Mark
btw, when u change it out, check your battery!!!!
IF ITS NOT FULLY CHARGED YOU WILL DAMAGE THE ALTERNATOR AND THE BATTERY!!!! DO NOT TRY TO USE A BAD BATTERY, IF YOU ARE DRIVING W/ A BAD ALT, YOUR BATTERY IS VERY STRESSED RIGHT NOW, as im sure you are too! dont worry sir...... we are here to help.
thanks alot dude yeah i know that guy was trying to rip me off hardcore! what the hell is an alternator rebuild? as fore bosch mine was replaced last summer and that was what was put in it, yeah i figured just go to napai think ill do that, so what do you think that shop was trying to tell me when they said rebuild or 700$ for a new one? is there something else that you might have to do tother than just change the alternator? becuase that is anew one for me! but yeah i think ill just go change the alternator and see what happens! if i have any questions ill ask what is you AIM name if you have one? im on a lot!! thanks for all the help! peace out
DAvid
ps how hard is it to change my belt and where could i get one of these for my alternator? umm also if i remember from changing mine last year you unplg the wires that go into the back of your alternaor and then a few screwes and brackets and its out right?
i think they were trying to get u up the arse without even a kiss on the cheek!
nothing else really, just make sure the battery is good.
disconnect the negative(black) terminal from battery
loosen the belt, pull it off the alt. pulley
remove bottom bolt then top bolt on alternator. (bottom bolt has a nut on the back so get 2 wrenches)
remove wires (2) from back of alt.
save the nuts!!!!
put in the new one in reverse order
go driving
