Im tired of my car stalling out when i first start it up and sputtering, etc. im off tomorrow and im goin to clean the ICV. So where is it exactly? And got any tips on how I should clean it? Thanks in advance.
Also, what's the best way to go about making a heat shield for my K&N filter? And where can I get the oil to clean the filter, and do i just squirt it on the filter or what?

im not sure on your car because its a 4cyl but its usual under the manifold, T shaped and silverish, kinda hard to see but on your car i think it'd be easier!
hmm the 4cyl one looks much different to the 6cyl one, kinda looks like my fuel filter! anyway hope it helps somehow

your K&N doesnt seem that close to the engine anyway, if u want a heatshield i'd rather extend it down towards the bumper! there isn't much space around your one for anything else!
thanks for the help but i think im just gonna get the stock airbox back in. im not looking to get any increased performance out of this engine (because im saving for the S52 swap) so i just want whatever is the least hassle. i would give my old intake and k&n filter away to whoever wanted it though. i dont know if it would fit a 6 cylinder or not.
K&N filter is different for 6 cyls... about the ICV, it seems to depend on the year... I've got a 92 318is, and it's super easy to get to. You can't see it on your picture, because you'd get to it from the driver's side. Mine sits right behind the intake manifold, so you don't have to take it off or anything. Just look for a metal cylinder type thing with a couple air hoses and an electrical connection attached.
for cleaning the icv use a alcohol based cleaner... i did mine the other night and just used alcohol... not like vodka, like rubbing alcohol, and used q tips, a tooth pick, and some paper towels and then just poor some in and let it sloosh around a little then poor it out... let it dry for about 10 min then spray some wd 40 in it until the valve is opening and closing smooth...
look at all the space in there, you can tell that car was designed with a 6 cylinder in mind. i cant wait to see one with the "bmw m power" underneath my hood
