Okay, on my '93 318is I started noticing a grinding noise coming from my back passenger-side rotor. Upon further inspection I saw where the caliper was pushing on the rotor. I jacked up the car and you could move the rotor back and forth without much effort. You could actually line it up where it didn't touch the caliper but as soon as you take it down off of the jacks it goes back into it's original position. What could be causing this? Is there something back there that I need to tighten? I know when this happens on the front end it's usually the ball joint....could this be so on the back side as well? Please help! ghead

The actual brake isn't grinding....just at the top where the rotor is angled it's hitting the caliper. Also, I think that the fact that the wheel can be shaken while jacked up is the root of the problem but I don't know how to fix it on the back.
im a auto tech and i seen this before- if the car was in accident once so bad it bent the rim and hit the calipar back that the bridge contacts the rotor. if u always owned it you should know the deal.
Well, it has 18" racing wheels....sometimes it causes the tire to smack the inside of the wheel well. I suppose that could have knocked something loose or bent something....but what? I'm trying to figure it out so I can replace it.
Dayumn...he said the whole hub assembly was shot and needed to be replaced. The only thing holding it on was the fact that it's a rear-wheel drive. WTH could have caused that? That's not something that just would happen with mileage I don't think. Sounds like I need to get some stiff suspension so the rim never gets close to the wheel well again.
I live in Nashville....it's funny you said that... The place that I got the assembly from said that someone called in today for the same thing and that today was the first they've heard of it. Oh well, It'll get fixed. Basically you have two options...get the assembly or buy the spindle and bearings. To just replace it is the easiest but if it doesn't work I'll just have to get the seperate pieces.
Man, what an azzface mechanic. He told me when I put it in that it would be 80-135 for labor. Well, he called today and said it's ready...to the tune of $375. He's charging me an hour of labor for trying to get another axle out of the hub assembly HE told me to go get! I thought you don't pay for labor that doesn't work...I have no idea if I should pay this. I guess I will but I wonder if there is any recourse.
that is crappy dude. you should go to another mechanic
