Broken Catalytic Converter? Smoked Corners?

so, I think my catalytic converter is shot, hasn't been replaced in 155k miles. Whenever i go over the slightest bump I hear a rattling sound like a can of nails coming from undearneath my car. The exhaust system itself and the brackets are all tight, it wiggles fine on the rubber mounts. Do you all agree that my catalytic converter needs to be replaced? Is there an alternative to replacing it, how much might a new or slightly used one cost?


Also I was wondering where i could get smoked corners for my car, like in the picture. The picture is of my car, I just photoshopped the corners to about how I would like them to be, maybe a little to dark. But if any of you know where i could find a pair of smoked corners like these, It would be greatly appreciated

get under ur car and bang on ur cat a few times. if it sounds like a baby rattle (i.e. a bunch of stuff shaking about inside the cat) its time to replace it.

the best bet....go to a GOOD muffler shop and ask them their opinion. if they are honest, they will tell you flat out. it should not cost a thing for an estimate.

Good luck finding a Cat. at a cheap price. The lowest price i've seen is $499 from bimmerworld.com...

Ya, my cats are AWFUL. Whenever I idle they rattle like INSANE.

Oh, and of course my car has 2 of them to replace, JOY.

If your cat is shot (no pun intended :P), then you'll smell a sulferic smell that kinda is like feint rotten eggs. That's pretty much a sure sign.

Sounds to me like this is a perfect opportunity for a full aftermarket exhaust sytem. Your bimmer is trying to tell you something, hehe

hey, i can prolly find you a cat back system pretty cheap.
its not performance, but its the type you keep in the garage till SMOG DAY, then you put the track pipe on the rest of the time...

works great too.

Speedy, what cat back system is it? just curious. "Illwasteyou" I have looked and only seen the dark smoke for the 4door, not the 2door coupe. Correct me if i'm wrong

hey guys, about the after market exhaust systems..........is the one offered in bavauto for a 95 model 325is an after market or oem replacement catalytic convertor?

I bought smoked corners a week ago from an ebay seller and they look fine. you can try alot of places though.

just remember that 2 door and 4 door are different and they will not fit is you get the wrong ones.
