How do I find out specifically what is causing the "brake light failure" indicator to come on? I've checked both brake light bulbs & fuse box; looked in owners manual and service manual. It is sporadic...sometimes this indicator comes on and the brake lights truly don't come on. This is a '97 328ic

i had the same problem what you want to do is check the contacts on the bulb holders and make sure they have a good connection with the tail lamp metal
