I've not heard of a 2.8l conversion, but I have heard of a 2.7l that uses a 2.7l crank and the normal pistons. It would probably have to be a custom job, but it might be possible to use the 3.8l crank and pistons and find out the bore diameters.
I assume you're attempting to build one of these? The engine is based on the m50 so it is possible.

so if i bore it to 2.7l i can use factory pistons, etc. but need a new crankshaft. anything else? Any other ideas or diameters that people know have happened or have info on.
i have a 93 325is btw, thought it might help for you to knwo.
I'm pretty sure the 328 had a 2.8L in it... you can see a huge jump of torque over the 325's torque... they had to do this because of the OBDII so that the car's performance would suck...
