Bmw E36 1992-1994 Dme

greetings,

after a week trying to find a RED LABEL dme, without having to buy a new one for $1200 and up from a dealer, an auto wreck shop finally found me one that i can use for $350 (johnny appreciate the help..)

now....one thing still bothers me....

i went to BMW dealer and they have no clue what's the purpose of BMW having 2 different kinds of DME

Red/Burgundy Label or White Label

can anyone explain why BMW made it this way? why is it so different? and according to the dealer, only pre 1995 cars that can swap DMEs without having to re program it...

it seems most of the members here know more than those dudes at the dealer....

and then you still have to run a 402 or 413 or whatever came with your car stock because the way they interpret voltage from your MAF (for one thing) is very different. there are a number of internal programming differences between model year OBDI DME's which make swapping between them impossible without changing other things.

My 1995 e36 320i OBD1 M50 Siemens DME 5WK9003 MS40.1 (ews2 enabled) has water damage, I need to replace it with Siemens DME 5WK9002 MS40.1 (non ews2) along with the loom. Will any Siemens 5wk9002 MS40.1 (non ews2) work or is there any specific numbers on the DME I should look for? The reason why I ask this is when I CALL AROUND THE SCRAPYARD they ask me about the other numbers even if I mention that it’s a Siemens MS40.1 5WK9002. Please help/advise,
