bmw e36 1.9l engine

Does anyone know how i find out which engine i have in my car(m40 or perhaps m43),i have been having probs with wrong parts (thermostat),the parts shops suggest an m43 but the stat for an m43 doesnt even look like mine!
mine seems to be recessed into the engine on the left hand side beside the fan and the elbow is around 6 inches long,whereas the part supplied the elbow is much shorter.

If it's a 1.9, it's an m44.
