BMW 316, 1.6 or detuned 1.8?
Hi there,
I have a BMW 316i, 1995 N reg. A few friends say that it's a detuned 1.8. Is this likely to be true?
Thank you.

It is the same engine, but with smaller displacement. So yes, it is a 1.6 liter engine.

No, it has the same rods most likely and a shorter stroke on the crankshaft.

Might be a stupid question, but if it is the same engine, then what modifications would I need to do to make it perform as a 1.8?
Thank you.

I think the crankshaft should do the trick. I am not certain, but maybe you would need different software.

How much of a performance difference is there between 1.6 and 1.8? Would it be something you could actually feel, or just a few bhp on a piece of paper?
