Where are you based, is it extremely hot or cold?

A good quality Brand name full synthetic oil should keep serve you well, Mobil 1, Castrol, Red Line etc

Hang on guys. As per the BMW LL-01 Specification from BMW NA they approve 4 oils for use in the M50/52 series of motors.

German Castrol 0w-30
Mobil 1 0w-40
Valvoline Synpower 5w-30
Penzoil Platinum European Formula 5w-30

Synthetic Engine Oils - BMW North America

Personally, I only ever use Mobil 1, or German Castrol when I can find it. Even in Alberta winters I have ran 0w-40.
