I noticed that the Bentley E36 manual is avaialble for download, as I found elsewhere in the forum. However, the copy I downloaded goes up to only 1998, and my car is a 1999, namely a 318is. Are there any important differences between a 1998 318is and one from 1999?

A Model Year (MY) 1999 vehicle is an E46 usually. Some E36's were produced and sold as MY1999, and they are no different then the 1998 version. However check the sticker inside your door for the exact production year and month. The E36 was phased out, and the E46 brought in for 1999. The two are very distinct visually, so if yours looks identical to a 1998 one, then its an E36.
