PhunkDJti is an unknown quantity at this point
i was planning on putting my '96 318ti to bed for the winter ( i live in buffalo, winters are brutal around here) and the battery charge indicator lights up on the cluster....buts its not bright, its real faint. that was about a week ago and everything still seems fine.

my question is: is this most likely the alternator or could the faint light possibly be triggered by a belt thats starting to wear?

could be your battery. but its a possibility your alternator could be going. i dont think the belt would affect it unless it was busted

the battery light is an indicator that your battery is not being charged by the alternator. I have had three cars that the light came on and everytime it was the alternator. BMW alternator's are like $300 tho so i'd look for a remanufactored one w/ a warranty. It went on my 95 318- found a remanufactured one for 50 bucs, slapped it in and never had a problem again.
