I'm thinking of doing this to my 94 325i. I really want a fkn manual. I'm tired of automatic. But i also REALLY love my car. I'm willing to fork out the $$$ to do it, but i would like to know if it will turn out well. Anyone have any comments?
This has been asked quite often on these forums; use the search function.
General consensus: its not worth it. sell your auto for a 5 speed.
the only way i or anyone else would reccomend you swapping an automatic transmission is if your car is going to be a project car and you want to install a 6 speed transmission along with thousand's of dollars in other modications...like a roll cage, supercaharger, complete suspention, etc.
good luck either way! :wink

I saw one on the umnitza website or maybe it was the autowerks site going for $2000. Its somewhere on the net... Also check Ebay...I may have seen one there too.
The used transmissions themselves arn't that bad, few thousand bucks, a clutch assembly, shift linkage, clutch pedals, and some wiring. It's a lot of work. It's not worth it enough to do a swap, it's much more cost effective to sell your car and buy a manual and do a quick clutch overhaul.
It is not a lot of work to do and the parts only cost around 1200-1500 depending on where you get it from. There is a site called Bav Auto Recycle that has a kit for about 1200 then it is 10 hours of labor by the book. One thing though is that most shops will just ground out the park wire(a safety feature, only lets you start when car was in park) they ground it out so you can start it, but then the car thinks its in park and your cruise control wont work. Make sure that they set it up so that when you press the clutch it grounds that wire out, then you wont have any problems.

Formally known as Asio.
it was from a stock 97 m3 with 24k miles on it... I belive those are getrag made if I'm not mistaken...it was a 5spd and does drive like new to me. a 6spd would have cost me about 2gs more... would have been nice, but I wasn't sure about the price of that

Dude, that's awesome! Getrag's are nice! thx!
BTW, guy w/ the 5 ser. The difference is that I believe the e36 is already set up to handle a manual transmission, but IDK if the 5 series was too. Just a thought.
