As I look around for a 325 manual, Im starting to give up hope. I can find lots of black automatic 325s for a very good price. How much will it cost to change the tranny to a 5 speed?
Also, I dont want to get a whole new engine and tranny, I just want the least expensive possible way to do this. (Although I might put in a nice flywheel while im on it)
to buy all new parts, it will probably cost around $2,500 depending on what you buy and where. But look if looking for used or salvaged car parts (which is what I'm doing at the moment), who knows, maybe a LOT less. If i were you, i'd just wait it out and find a good 5speed, they ARE out there, you just have to find them.
I had to search for 2 months to find my e36 but it was worth it!
Buy a 5 speed, anyone who drives an automatic e36 is really missing out.
And i hate to say it, but anyone who wanted an automatic e36 wasn't wanting it's true performance either.
5 speeds =
1. more control over the car
2. better performance
3. better gas mileage
Call each person if the ad doesnt specify, get the autotrader or whatever the day it comes out and make the calls that day. I jumped on my car's ad 2 days after it came out and paid in cash.
Perservere and you will be rewarded!

Hold out babe, after my '88 M3 died all I wanted was to be back in a BMW but I just held out for the right car... I held out for a year it killed me but I am SOOOOO happy that I did now. plus while you wate save for mods for when ya get it
Let me help you out here.... FORGET CHANGING TRANNYS.... how is that for sage advice? You have find a tranny, change the flywheel, remove the starter, which will entail removing the intake manifold (retarded ? yes required ? most of the time...) oh yeah then you need to get a new clutch set up, new interior parts for the shifter, a new rear differential (different final gearing ratio) and while i am not sure maybe a diofferent DME since the one you have now controls the auto tranny (i am not certain on this point but I am certain about everything else). Your car also will have NO resale value after the swap, and by the way the labor to do the work is likely well over a thousand bucks (at least in NYC)
yeah if its the look of your car you are going to miss or something take all the parts off this car and put them on your new car, but dont switch trannys way to much money and to many things can go wrong! go buy a new one! hell come to bellingham manuals EVERYWHERE

Patience is a virtue i guess

i don't know about better gass mileage... if u beat up every gear, allmost redlinging, thwn your not getting any more gas mileage as u would with an automatic!!
mine is automatic.. NOT BY CHOICE...
plus when your sitting on the highway in traffic... it sux.. yes i know, because i've had a 03 gti 5 speed... it was fun, but not fun in traffic!! oh and ecspecially when your drunk... thats no fun!!!!
