First thought is a need for a transmission fluid change.

Agreed.....^ What is the mileage.....due @ 90,000.....fluid & filter kit. This would be the first I would do if your car has close too or over 90,000 miles on it. Do you have a 95 325 or 96 328?
I used Redline D4 ATF 5.3 quarts required......Bavauto.com has it for $8.95 a quart
