I can get a tranny with about 80k miles for around $600 including shipping and driveshaft, just wondering how much I would be expecting to pay for everything else needed minus install? I think my tranny is messed up right now and if it is about 2 grand to fix I might be able to do this instead.

you're looking at another 500-600, Nick. You need linkage, flywheel, clutch, pedal and a few other things. While you're at is, throw in a lightweight flywheel and m5 clutch.

There is a huge thread about this over on bimmer forums, about 20 pages long.

Yes. Get the correct transmission, ecu, software, and linkage, expensive but possible.
Thanks a lot i'll have to check out zionsville. Also would getting a 328 trans be better performance wise, or no because it's designed for an engine with a bit more torque?
