OK i know everyone posts about getting it done, but i have finally found a company in Australia willing to do it.. And the price is better than fair..
The few things i wanna know is
a) should i put in a shortshifter?
"advantages and disadvantages"
B) should i upgrade the clutch
"pricing"
c) should i opt for a different rear dif
"will it help that much on a 318i?"
also any other aussies out there that want information on working on bmws "performance, gearboxes, stuff a stealership wouldnt do" pm me i can hook u up with a great company
a) yes. If you are on a budget, or do not care to pay for a UUC SSK, then buy a stock shift lever from a Z3 or Z4. The Z4 has more of a reduction than the Z3. I believe it is approx a 60% reduction. It is a little stiff at first but once you start the car and drive a little it is fine (don't know if that is normal...) Advantages, you get a shorter throw. Disadvantages.... um... you have a shorter stick? used
B) You most likely do not need an upgraded clutch. However, if you feel the need to spend the money... it won't hurt. No clue on pricing.
c) Yes it will. There are a few different ways of going about this. One is to leave the auto diff on there. 4.44:1... your car will not be able to go faster than 88mph but it will get there in a hurry. Or something that me and my mechanic have been tossing around is taking the internals from an E30 325 and swapping them into the E36 diff casing.I believe that the gearing is 3.71 or 3.75 can't remember (been a while since I've looked into this). We think it will fit, but I've not yet coughed up the money to do it/try it. To the best of our knoweldge it will work. Or you can spends a lot of money and get an aftermaket diff. However, they are very expensive.

Its very helpful. The cost does not out weigh the gains. You need new transmission, driveshaft, linkage, ecu and at the end of the day your car is still losing to civics.
Dude shut the fuck up, i ask some quick technical details.. anyone else got some more input??
also over here in Aus bimmers arnt quite as cheap as u get them, a 318i 1996 still retails for $18000 au which is $15,000 us..
a 325 1995 will go for $24,000+ and at the time i didnt have the money to afford that, im 19 and in australia i drive a car that not many others do... Its my money and i want a manual ill get my manual..
Now the rear dif... I was think of grabbing one off a 325i... will there be any real bonus over a 318i rear dif??
also the fly wheel.. i can spend the extra but i was hoping to put a full audio system through her at the same time, so that can be put off and ill just do this manual conversion properly..

The diff casing for the E36 6cly is different from the 4cly. So it will not fit without adding a 6cly subframe and a cutom lengthed drive shaft. Or the internals from an E30 325i should fit in your diff casing. If its the same as a 318i or is 5spd diff casing.

what year is your 318 nd how many km's has it done? or miles i can convert :P
im in nz nd yeah beemers r pretty expensive 2! finding them manual is a mission impossible nd on my budget it was even harder. but in the end i found a 320 with a lot of km's and manual. everything working fine! so im sure u can find a cheaper 325 or smtin faster than a 318 thts done a bit more km's for less than 15,000!!!!!
