Anyone know what this pipe is?

Driving home & began to hear a rasping / blowing noise coming from under the bonnet, it sounded like the exhaust was blowing but it isn't its this pipe.

It seems to have snapped at the bend, which branches out from another main pipe.

Its metallic &* runs from one side of the car to the other across & behind the front radiator.

It also appears to branch off from either the exhaust or inlet manifold.

There is no fluid running through it, but evidence of soot or similar.

Any indications as to what the pipe is & how easy is it is to replace & the cost would be welcome.

Hard to identify the pipe from the photos without knowing the model of your car, but it looks like an EGR pipe. You should be able to identify it from exploded parts diagrams here RealOEM.com Online BMW Parts Catalog by entering details of your vehicle.

The make & model of my car is:

BMW E36 Saloon 2.5TD 1995 (87,000 genuine miles) with the M51 6 cylinder engine & manual gearbox.

I've had a look at the car parts catalogue, but couldn't see it.

The 'masking tape' is the temporary indicator of where the pipe is cracked & located on the car.

What would cause the EGR pipe to crack?

I really can't tell where that pipe is, but I have a bad feeling it may be one of your turbo pipes. How is teh car running? If possible, can you add some arrows or something to the "far away" pictures that show where the broken pipe goes? Like, which side of the car (left/right), how far back, and how far down...

Spot on with the part number & picture!

Connecting pipe between the Exhaust manifold & the EGR valve.

I visited Williams this morning & they showed me the same picture, however the earliest they could get the part was Tuesday @ £65.00!

I decided to go the local vehicle scrap recyclers & they had a good one in on the same model car, so I picked it up.

Quite an easy replacement job.

Gave the EGR valve a clean whilst it was off too.
