Cool Any advice on A.C. problem

Hello there, I have a 1994 325i SE. Ever since I bought the car, a couple of years ago, I have had problems with the air con. To be specific, the air con works fine, it's the direction at which I would like the fresh frosty air to go that is the problem. If I turn the dial that selects foot well/windscreen/dash blowers it barely makes a difference. At times I can turn it and feel the like it's turning something mechanically within the controls, but at a certain point it becomes loose again. I can not get the demister blowers to clear the entire windscreen and am forced to drive in an Ace Ventura style, ie. sticking my head out the window (this would be fine only I'm in England and it is not particularly warm or dry).

I was wondering if any of you fine people of knowledge have heard of this and have any words of wisdom of which you would be so kind to impart upon myself. I don't know wether changing the unit in the dash would fix this or if the problem is more to do with the linkages behind the unit.

Have you changed the cabin filter recently? A dirty filter will impede airflow. Several writeups exist to help & the procedure is not difficult. Might be a place to start.

cabin filter would account for air volume/speed. but it sounds like your vent switch may be broken, from what i gather, your saying that the air flows whereever it wants to regardless to what you choose as the direction. to be honest im not too good with the whole heating/cooling vent system, ill let someone else take a shot at that.

try popping off the dial and seeing if it is broken in the back... if its not catching maybe its just broken and you didnt realize it?? im not really sure... and cabin filter will help improve airflow as stated above...
