So my airbag light is on... Ive heard its "common". Is it most likely electrical...? or are my airbags not going to work if i crash??? The dealer told me it could be many different things. Does anyone know what they think the problem is and how much to fix it? used

I heard from this forum that your airbags won't go on in case of an accident because your airbag light is on. I have had this problem, I got it fixed from the dealership they replace the seat belt tensioner. But after 1 year or so the problem came back, so I said screw it.

My 1996 328 has the same problem. I find it very wierd because my car has never been crashed. I dont really know what to do besides pretend it isnt on, and pray that my airbags go off if I crash

same thing with my '97 328I, dealer said the system is INOPERATIVE if the light is on. I was not willing to bet on him being correct and having it fail during an accident. They replaced the drivers side seat belt tensioner. $300 - $500 if I recall correctly. Light is out.

hmm, seat belt tensioner, it doesn't sound too complicated to fix... anyone ever fixed that on their own?

Most likely the seat mat and sensor, it senses if somebody is occupying the passenger side seat, very common in an e36.
Number 12 and 13 in this pic.

I had the same problem about a year ago. I took my car to the dealership and they replaced the seatbelt tensioner. The light went out, but the cost of the replacement was about $350 Parts and labor

A few months later the light came back on and so i said "ohh well"... I need to take the the car in for inspection by the end of this mth, so i went to my mechanic and he read the error codes... turns out to be 4 errors
1) Tensioner
2) the airbag control unit
and two other things that i cant remember.

The light went out and has remained out up to the present time. This is such a common problem that to try and fix it and then refix it again would be a waste of money and time.. but hey if you have both then 2" class="inlineimg" />

Based of what ive heard, im going to assume its my passenger airbag sensor, or the seatbelt tensioner. But the airbags will work right...?

I would have it looked at by the dealer asap.

Just signed on as a new member. I had the same problem on my '95 325is. Dealer advised it was a dirty sensor (my light went out after a minute or so). Had the sensor replaced. 2 months later....light came on. Still goes out after minute or so. Airbags are not defective and will deploy in collision (so I am told). Ill head back to the dealer to see what they wil do......
