I'm relatively new to the BMW world. I'm in the market for an E36 3-series. I'm looking at either a 323is, a 325is, or a 328is. I would like the car to have about 50,000 miles on it. A 328is is what I want, but its hard to find one with under 50,000 miles on it for a cheap price. So, if I can't find one of those, I'll look for a 323is or a 325is. From what I understand, the 323is can outrun the 325is, if it has been reprogrammed to an obd-1. What does that stand for and how much would that cost? I've seen a CPU board that supposedly does the job. Is there any such thing for a 325is to make it almost equal (in hp/torque) to a 328is?

so you are looking for one that is after 96 with 50,000 miles.....if you live over here in the bay area there are a shit load.........wish i could have looked around more for a car........my parents just sorta picked one out for me.....they looked at a 97 328is......silver......$16,000 but they were all......its too fast.......good luck to you bro..

well a 325 and a 323 would be harder to find under 50k miles. the differnce btw the 2.8 and the 2.5l hp is only like 9hp i believe. a chip would do the job for you. and ODB - 1 its really just a ecomony measure they used to use from 92 to 95 in the e36 series then the 96-99 e36 were ODB - 2 which runs smoother and cleaner. you can buy kits to change from ODB - 2 to ODB - 1 which could make a 96-99 m3's hp gain 70 digits. but that really dosent help you. also why dont you buy a 325is then drop a 3.2l US spec s52 engine in it. it would be faster then a 328 and it would probably cost less. hope this makes sense and helps you

the 323i/is started production in 98 so you wont find any that cheap. and stock vs stock a 323 can beat a 325, bmw NA numbers are about 7.1 for the 323 and around 7.8 for the 325. mileage doesnt really say alot about the condition of the car, a car with 90k miles can be in pristine condition, and a car with 40k miles could be in awful condition. the engine will remain reliable for long past 100k miles so i wouldnt rule out cars with 50k+ miles.

My parents will probably be the ones to buy the car, and they said if I were to get one, it would have to have around 50,000 miles. They think lower mileage makes a big difference. It's really not my call (even though I wish it was).

How much would a 3.2 s52 US spec engine cost? I'm not up for doing modifications that are very costly, because I am a high school student and will soon be in college, so my budget is tight (I will put as much into my car as I can though ).

thats deffinately not worth it. it would probably cost more than a M3 and still lack the M3's suspension, brakes, Mtech kit, wheels, and seats. the engine (used) would probably cost around $3-4k and after labor and diff. change it would be close to 10k.
