If you have an unchipped/unsharked car, what is the top speed limited to, and what happens when you hit that speed?

Well, my car isn't sharked yet, so I can help ya out. My speedo reads 140mph when my gov. kicks in, but someone said it's actutally 135 (the speedo is off or something, I'm not sure). When you hit your top speed your car just kinda sits there. It doesn't shut the engine off or drop your rpm or anything, it just sits there. And you start to feel all akward so you just let off the pedal, lol.

Mine is an auto, and only goes to about 125mph. But it's a 325is, so you should be able to go faster... ghead

I sharked my car this morning, but haven't hit a top speed yet. I can say though, you notice a HUGE performance increase from sharking.

Do you really notice an increase in power??? I was so torn and had no idea whether or not it was worth the money!! My intake+exhaust definetely made a difference, and if the chip did too I'll be heading out to buy one too. So, chip+headers are on the way! hehe

According to Dinan, the speed limiter is 130mph. You guys are nutz testing this, with my luck, I would get caught and thrown under the jail.

yeah, its when you start getting into southern US that they actually arrest people for speeding...Kinda funny...Tenn. Stateys and Virginia Stateys are nobody to mess with. I wish there were more people who had sharked a 318. I want to hear first hand what kind of performance IS noticed considering I haven't what it doesn't do...

206km/h or 128mph is the factory speed governer on the north american 325/328's

With my speedo governer removed I've only tried up to 230km/h (140mph)

On the 325's you can feel the governer, the car just cut power for about a second. On the 328's the car just stops accelerating, but it's smooth, not on/ff like the 325's.

I've not read a more accurate statement on this site. I've had encounters with both, and don't look forward to the next....

NC state troopers arn't too bad, they will ticket the shit out of you though.

I think I've hit about 130 in my auto 98 323is, but that was a while ago and I don't remember everything clearly, I think I ran out of engine power, not gear. I haven't tried it since, but I hit 110-115 on almost a regular basis

Are you sure the governor on a 328is is that low? I've hit 140 with it ON, so unless my speedo is insanely off kilter, I dunno....

it felt like it was limited to 125, the car just stopped accelerating, but still had room left on the tack, and had been pulling strongly up to 125.

Maybe someone removed the tops speed limit for you. I've heard the dealership can do that for you, if you ask nicely or know the mechanic.

Why are American BMW limited at those speeds.

A standard Europe 328i has a top end from 238km/h.

Mine is a lil tuned and runs easily 250km/h and then hits the limiter so hard its stuttering all over
