97' 328i convertible top problem

when i press the electric top button the top goes backand the plastic window raises up but the tunnel cover doesnt raise up.
brought it to a bmw dealeship and paid $200 for them to diagnose that it was the tunnel cover shocks and straps and it'll cost to $2,100 to fix, i dont have that kind of cash (in the navy), are there any alternatives to getting my top to work or finding those parts for less?

My '98 328i does the same thing, the cover will not come up because the top is in its way. After you push the "top down" button and the top begins to go back, reach back and grab the top and gently pull it toward you. Once I pull the top, the cover releases and the top continues to go down. Your problem might be different, but it's worth a try. I have been doing this for 2 years, and it has made no difference whatsoever in the top. Good luck.

thanks for the links to the parts i need, cost a hell of a lot less to just buy them myself, i really appreciate it, thanks again for you help. in the meantime ill try pulling on the top some and see if that has any effect, if not ill just go ahead with the new parts.

2ndsnake... is there a way to adjust the top so the tonneau doesnt hit the top as its going down?
mine does the same thing...
