So, I have a 97 318Ti, Its done about 150,000k's and its automatic.
6 months ago it randomly cut out while I was driving, the engine just turned off.
At first I thought it was the battery, but then all the lights on the dashboard came up.
Since then I have changed the battery, so I know its not that.
After that it then started doing it randomly. When I turn the car on (sometimes) or when I'm driving.
When I turn the car on and it decides to cut out, it will cut out 2-6 times. So I have to put my foot on the gas pedal to keep it from cutting out. (It doesn't do that all the time)
So when I'm driving, if I don't take my foot off the gas pedal when it does it, it will cut out for about 2-3sec (you can feel the car losing power) and then it will come back to life as if nothing happened.
But if I take my foot off the gas pedal, it will completely cut out.
My car also sometimes does mini backfires...
I took it into my mechanic, he can't seem to find out whats going on with the car because every time I take it into him, my car behaves and never cuts out around him.

He ended up getting some guys in who have the BMW computer thing to run a diagnostic and reset the service gauge.
They reset the service gauge, but they said my cars computer wasn't talking back to their computer.
So, I'm curious. Has anyone else experienced something along the lines of what my car is doing, and did you end up finding a solution?
Worse case scenario so far is that the computer is stuffed

I really hope that's not the case!
Cheers for your time and help

I really appreciate it, thank you!
