Hi,

I have 1996 318i with a cold air-intake. I am planning to get a mod chip for it but can't seem to find one. I can get one from DINAN but I need to send my ECU to then which takes about 2-3 weeks, plus its really expensive ($300).

I saw on ebay E36 chips going for under $100 but they are all for 1991-1995 models. I am willing to spend about $120 does anyone have any suggestions. What about J. Caportti chip, I can't even find that.

Since your car is OBDII, you can't chip it like the <95 cars. You have to get a shark injector, or send it to be reprogramed. I don't think you'll find it for less than 120 though. Good luck looking

The heat shield is even more important than the increase in filter surface area. Upgrading to a larger cone filter is actually worse than your stock setup if you don't use a heatshield. Race cars do not require heat shields for open style cone filters as they usually exceed 80-100km/h constantly which supplies the engine with constant cool air. However, for street use you will need a heat shield. You will "feel" a significant different, the throttle response will feel less laggy and more responsive.
