The heat shield is even more important than the increase in filter surface area. Upgrading to a larger cone filter is actually worse than your stock setup if you don't use a heatshield. Race cars do not require heat shields for open style cone filters as they usually exceed 80-100km/h constantly which supplies the engine with constant cool air. However, for street use you will need a heat shield. You will "feel" a significant different, the throttle response will feel less laggy and more responsive.
