My left brake light wasn't working--so I replaced the bulb and it still wasn't working. So I bought a new bulb holder (not sure what the name of the part is) that was recommended by my mechanic, but it still isn't working--I think the metal contacts are worn--what do I need to do? is there a fix for this?

I was having the same problem with my reverse lights and brakes and I had the switch replaced. Not sure if that is the same part you replaced the (holder). That did the trick on mine. Ask your mechanic if this is the same part as the switch for the lights.

Is the switch you are referring to the piece that holds the buylb, or is it something else? I replaced the part that actually holds the bulb.

The part you replaced is the bulb socket. I dont think its the switch, because if it was it would affect both of the lights. If you have a friend a e36, take out one of his tail lights, and put it in place of yours and see if that works. If so than you need a new tail light for that side. If not I dont know.
