328i All Motor?

i have a 96 328i and i am getting ready to loose my liscence for a year so i want to pull the motor and build it. I had heard that someone makes a stroker kit? thats somthin that im lookin for. i had also heard about putting in m3 cams? i have a m50 manifold and a cai however i want to do all motor no nitrous no forced induction just pure european power. basically what i am wanting to know is where how much and some dyno numbers? also what is crank knifing? never even heard of it till i read another thread?" please explain. thanks

Knife-edging(or edge-knifing) is a process by which the lead edge of the crank shaft is machined to a tappered point. This is supposed to decrease resistance of the crank while moving through the oil in the pan. I have never had it done to a crank(hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it) but I don't think this is a mod to do if your not racing the car seriously. I don't think anything major would be gained by doing this to a relatively un-modified engine. I suppose this could copromise the integrity of the crankshaft, too. i have no idea how this is actually done however.

Or you could get ahold of an M3 engine and balance it maybe a port and polish aswell.

you can bore the block and install an M3 crank/pistons/rods. It tends to be just as expensive as buying an M3 engine though. But, if you can do the work yourself and not have to pay a shop labor, you could probably do it cheaper.

I haven't crunched the numbers yet, but I think an M3 crank, with JE rods and pistons might be cheaper than oem M3 pistons/rods. There is an advantage to going with JE pistons though, you can get any compretion ration you want.

i peeled out in my h.s. parking lot leaving on the last day of school and our po-dunk town pig gave me a reckless driving ticket along with no front liscence plate,tint,too low sun strip, and obstructive objects hanging from rear view mirror(marti graw beads). however according to my lawyer that very well could be hurassment. but he also said a wreckless driving ticket in a school zone is gonna stick so im gonna make the best of it.

Theres no such thing as a stroker 'kit'. You have to build it up yourself. With the 2.8L simply using an s52 crank and rods will give you a 3.2L stroker motor. Along with s52 cams and a bunch of other little mods (knife edging the crank, PnP, uprated valve springs, etc) Some impressive numbers can be acheived.

Simply doing an m3 crank, rods, and cams will cost around 1500. Thats not bad for the power it yeilds, but to do the other mods adds up, and many people start these projects, then go over budget and realize it would have cost just as much or have been cheaper to just buy an M engine. s52/s50 over rev's can be had extremely cheap and would most likely be more cost effective and yeild better gains in the end.
