During my last oil change I had a check engine light on (1998 328I Sedan). The dealer said I had to change the catalytic converter for $1900. I said I have to wait for a few days and the light is now off! Thank heavens I did not fix it! What is the scoop? Is there any way to show that the catalytic converter has indeed failed? There is no rotten eggs smell!

Should I trade this in for a more reliable car? I do like this one. A 1998 328 has a value of approx $12,000 with 86,000 miles on it.

Thanks for any advice.

ahhh you probably had a loose gas cap = check engine light but it can be other things to take it to a local autozone next time they will hook it up to a scanner and check what codes come up then go from there.... dealerships are rapists. ... you can buy converters after market from companys on the internet far cheaper than that. what dealerships say is not the final word.
