320i Problem

Am asking this on behalf of a colleague, whose husband owns an N-reg (1995) 320i.

It's been having issues, so went into BMW to be looked at. They have diagnosed the problem as either the wiring loom or the central computer - they won't know which it is until they replace the loom, apparently.

They say that this was caused by one of the ignition coils failing and sending the spark backwards, thus frying the wiring / computer.

Is this possible? Is this a known fault? Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

The car has done 52,000 miles, so is not a high miler. Symptoms were that they were driving along when the engine died, great plumes of smoke came from under the bonnet and the horn kept going off. In the end they had to disconnect the horn.

Any advice or suggestions appreciated. :)
