Hi--

I've got a '94 318is which is a daily driver. Last week I got into it and the motor started surging like crazy. First it would nearly stall and then it would rev to maybe 2k and then it would nearly stall again, or sometimes it would stall. I was about three miles from home and I managed to nurse it back but it was a close call in a few places. Especially when I went to put on the brakes and found that the power assist was gone.

Does this sound like a vacuum leak or something more complicated? Any suggestions would be welcome--I have no funds to take the car to the dealer or even an indie so I have to sort out the problem as cheaply as I can right now.

If you have no money at all, start with the cheapest fixes first...run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through the system...

Next I would look toward the fuel pump...

ridikuledind has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Mine did the same thing. It was the mas airflow sensor. It was an expensive part, but its very easy to fix yourself. I also had to change my fuel pump...its under the bake seat and its easy to fix too.

Thanks for the help. I was actually thinking it might be the airflow sensor but lack of power assist on the brakes made me think vacuum leak.

What did you pay for the airflow sensor if I may ask?

when you experienced the lack of powr assist for the brakes was the engine about to stall or already stalled. if it was at a really low RPM or it was stalled then it was probablly becasue there was no vacume for the power brakes. i'd just check the free fixes forst. like make sure no vacume lines just have gotten dissconected somehow. was there a check engine light on?

Check engine light was on, but it often is because the alternator is slowly going south.

I'm going to look at the air hoses tomorrow. Does anyone know what an airmass sensor is going to set me back, or can you suggest a good source? I think it's the kind of thing it's better to buy new.

Thanks everyone for the help.
