I recently purchased my first BMW and after reading another post about the 318is v the 320 and which is best and why etc.
Poster 'Ali Bumble'wrote -Right lets start at the beginnig The 318i has 115 bhp and comes as four door saloon. It uses a 4 cylinder 2 valve per cylinder giving 8 valves and not much guts 0 - 62 mph in 12.9 sec. The 318is comes as a 2dr coupe up to 1997 and then a limited run of 4 door is saloons were launched with the whole mtech pack side skirts recaros etc. this model uses a twin cam unit giving 4 valves per cyclinder developing 140 bhp but torque is still lacking.
The thing i am confused about is that i own a 1993 4door 318i se- This is stated on the UK registration document. I have looked over the net and carnt find any trace of a 4door........WHATS GOING ON?????????
I thought all 318's are 4 cylinder engines.. which means... there are 2 valves per cylinder... 1 intake, and 1 exaust... 2x4 = 8... So if im right and all 318's are 4 cyl... you have an 8 valve engine.
very last 318i saloons for europe were built in South Africa. They had the M44 16 valve engineand rear disc brakes. This move was likely to ease initial production changes for the E46.
The '99 316i Compacts (and probably coupes and tourings) actually have the same 1.9 litre four cylinder engine as the E46 318i.
In the US all 318i models have the 16 valve engine. Not sure if this is true for early E36s though. It is interesting to note the the weight the car has gained over the years has not been matched by more powerful engines, this is especially true of the 318iS.
I am guessing 93 is considered one of the last years they made 318s for europe
Actually....The NA spec 1.8s are DOHC 16V engines. The Euro-spec engines are SOHC 8V engines. I'm pretty sure one is an M40, the other is an M42. The OBDII is M44.
*not too sure on engine codes, could be wrong.

318i (SE) 4 door models in the UK are 8 valve engines. The iS engine is a 1.9ltr, 16 valve M44 as stated with 140bhp.
I did think that the M44 engined 318iS (140bhp) came only as a coupe whereas the 4 door version had the 1.8
I've never seen a 4 door 318 with the full blown M-sport pack factory fitted.

only a hand full were made of the 318is saloon and were built in south africa and were fitted with m-tec pack,it had the m44 twin cam 16v engine producing 140bhp because it's a saloon car it carried more weight than the coupe which carried on until 1999-2000 which ment it is slower than the coupe, saloons more like a wolf in sheeps clothing. not sure if the is saloon were made for us market.
