Not sure if any of you can help, my mechanic has run out of idea, wonder if any of you clever guys can help..
This is only when the engine is cold i think, but when the engine is warm it does effect it as well..
Basically when i put my foot on the accelerator the car stutters, it doesn't respond to the pedal straight away, it used to, but now there is a slight splutter then it revs, this is also noticable when the car is warm and trying to pull away quickly, what are the obivous things to check. it's weird and has only been doing it in the last 4 months, the car has just had an oil service, 1 month ago..

Sounds like you're losing backpressure. You might try checking the exhaust pipes for air leaks. Also check all vaccum hoses and the intake boot. Any leaks in the intake or exhaust system will screw up the car computer readings for A/F ratio. It'll definitely make the car sputter and lose power. Does the exhaust smell very rich?
Anyways, when the car is cold, try not to rev it past 3000RPM. It won't run perfectly till it has reached normal running engine temp.

HI.well i changed the park plug but i still have to check my vaccum hoses and leakes in my exhust system etc....good luck with yours and if u get it fix before me let me know what it took.
Hi guys. I am having the same problem too!!!!!!!!! I have a 94 318i. Any updates? I have no clue why it does that. Kinda annoying. At first, i thought it was the transmission, but after reading this, it makes sense....but still don't know anything about anything -_-.... Thanks!!!!!!!!!!
I had the exact same problem with my 318i not long ago!
I had a rather serious leak in the exhaust system, about 5-10 cm before the O2/oxygen sensor.
It made the car behave like described in this thread.
If this, or any other airflow sensor/reader is getting bad or no signals, this usually happens!
The engine is an M43 from 1994.
My exhaust had actually broken nearly into two pieces! (my car is well past reasonably low, and it cracked when I drove over a speedbump in the road with four people in the car hehe)
Thanks Zikonian, I appreciate your reply all the way from Norway!!! I should go check the exhaust and oxygen sensors when I have free time. THanks for the help.
I have the same problem with my 1995 318is too. My car also majes a horrible noise that sounds like my clutch fan is rubbing on plastic, but thats not what it is.....

ahh cold weather. my car as well used to do that when i drove it in the winter, however its pretty typical of any cold car (any model any make) if the problem goes away when its warmed up than you may not have a problem to be concerned about, just drive the car conservatively untill your car gets to the proper operating temp
