Question 318 ci air flow meter problem ???

Can anyone help with a problem please ....
I have a 99 v reg 318ci coupe that will tick over but not rev when the air flow meter is plugged in,
when i unplug it the car will tick over and rev correctly.
I have bought and fitted a new meter thinking that would be the problem but it's still there and i can't figure out what could be causing this.
Any suggestions please
