Ill be honest with you here, the spring is not hard to recoil it and give more tension so it retracts.
BUT
first of the spring is a coil type spring, meanin its a real bitch to make it stay there while youre trying to make it harder.
It is also very unsafe to do that because you are chenging the tension and thus the seatbelt functioning.
The best thing you can do is to just get a new seat belt from the dealer, is not that expensive, like 60
Then you jsut pull the plastic out and fit the new belt in there. very easy, and this will give you a new looking belt and safe one that works.
I've replaced both seatbelts on my 93 325i when i got, they were not retracting and where all scrchet.. Believe me on an actident you dont want a failing seat belt that may not hold you in place./
60 bucks is no brainer.. Hope it helps./
