I have always used references for my posts and never go beyond my knowledge base when I try to help individuals on this forum as I do not believe misleading people is a way of helping them.
That being said, check the statement below and check the link that the statement came from. You can also visit http://www.bmwheritage.com
In 1995, a ZF 5HP18 five-speed automatic transmission was offered on the M3 as optional equipment. During the 1994 to 1995 model year, around 10,000 USA and 18,500 non-USA versions of the M3 were produced.
The M3 lineup expanded in '97 with the U.S. introduction of the four-door sedan. The engine had been enlarged to 3.2 liters in '96, which upped torque 11 lb-ft to 236. While all M3 coupe models used a five-speed manual, the M3 sedans came with rowable gears or an optional five-speed automatic. Rarest of the M3s are the Lightweights sold in '95 and '96, although only 122 of these upgraded-performance coupes made it to the U.S.
And my last refernece is my friend's 1997 M3 5 speed automatic that I just drove back from the Montreal F1 because he got too drunk to drive back on his own.... yup Villeneuve hit the wall "AGAIN" at least Heidfeld finished.
I believe a the +1 no longer applies.
My mistake was not posting my reference(s).
I can post more references if required!

True, but the 97' 3.2 has the same horsepower figure as the 3.0. It does, however, have 11 lb/ft more torque at 400 lower rpms. Depending on final drives, the figures probably are not far off.
