Hello everyone - hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I just recently purchased a 1997 328ic (love it!), but there was no owners manual with the car. I was driving back from Daytona to Jacksonville and the check engine light came on - oil is good, everything else from what I can tell is okay, no other lights came on. Is there a way to tell what this is indicating without going to my mechanic - there's a button called check located beside the temp button - does it tell you what is going on? Sorry to be so dumb, but the last one I had was an 85 528e without a lot of electronics. Also, does anyone know of a source for owners manuals for these older models? The cheapest one I've found online is $65 on ebay. Thank you very much for any help you can provide.

Well, Kevyn with a y, I like your username, and I also like your car.

My suggestion would be to go to a place like autozone where they will read your codes for free.

If you look around, you might be able to find a PDF of the owner's manual on the web somewhere. If you have any specific questions, DRZ on this forum had a similar car to yours, and he may still have the owner's manual.

Check lights can be very general. It may mean there's an issue with the emissions system. It can be as simple as a fuel cap not on tight enough.

Agreed with ^ witeshark, on the check engine light......you can bring it to your local Autozone or Advanced Auto & they will read the code for you, as for the owner's manual I found this place...... for $34.99

01/24/2009: most of the PDF files "are corrupt". I need a 97 328i owner's manual.

If you find any corrupt files on that site let me know and I will get them fixed, I just tried the E36 owners manual download, which works perfectly.

Of the PDF files, the only ones I got to work were the Seat Sensor and Ignition barrel files.

I tried it again and no joy. I then tried IE and all was well. So it would seem to be a problem between the site and Mozilla Firefox.
