1997 318i 5sp problem not engaging gear. Advice??!!

Hey gang.

I just recently picked up this pretty looking red convertible, but seems to have a major problem shifting, clutch feels fine but the shifter seems limp when I try to go through the gears will not engage when I let go just go backs to neutral, had to have it towed.

Could it be shift cable? Or something make?

Any insight would be great.

If the car goes in gear with the engine off then it could be the clutch assembly... if not then i would check the linkage...
