Hi There ...

I'm a new member to this group looking for a little advice. I have a 1996 318ti in which the 'Check Engine' light just came on today. In idle, the engine shakes but in motion, things seem to be fine. No delay in acceleration.

Any thoughts on what the problem could be? My initial guess would be the Spark Plugs and/or Wires but I'm no car expert.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

this could be a misfire in one of your sparkplugs. go to autozone and have the obdII checked - for free. then you will know the cause of the vibration.

aboard!

could be a misfire. check the hoses for leaks too (like the breather hose on the valve cover.) vaccuum leaks like in a hose can make it shake like crazy or run rough as hell in idle.

Take it to a BMW dealer & have them check it out. That "Check Engine" lite could be a *lot* of things, including problems with your airbags. Only way to know for sure is to have a mechanic plug their handheld diagnostic computer into your engine analyzer. Not sure who else besides BMW dealer would own one of those?

I also have a 1996 318TI, had same problem a while ago. In my case, it turned out it was a "defective gas cap"...yep, that's what the readout said. Since it was still under warranty they gave me a new cap. That cleared up the problem for me...

Thanks everyone for your help. I took the car to my German car mechanic and found out it was my Crank Case Vent Valve which cost me $180.00, parts and labor. Not too bad.

The car runs great now. No more shaking!

Thanks again, everyone!
