Hi All,

I am new to this site and any insight would be appreciated. Yesterday, after school, my car would not stay started. It drove in the mornig fine but I did notice at red lights the engine would sound weak? On the freeway it was fine. After school, the car would start (not pressing on the gas pedal) and then it would die out with the "battery" and "check engine" light on, then the "oil" light would come on. I tried repeatedly to re-start and this time press on the gas pedal and reving the engine. Eventually it started, but this morning it did the same thing.

I just had the battery changed (the original one lasted me almost 10 years!) at PepBoys and took it to my mechnic to check the charging system, and I think the alternator too (are they the same thing?). I put in a new started earlier this year and don't know what else could be wrong.

I do have an alarm in there that I do not use anymore. It quit on my a couple of years ago and a co-worker suggested it could be an electrical problem?

Sorry so long and I appreciate any advice in advance. I really love my car and want to take it to around 200,000 miles, I have 135,600 now and have been told the car should last quite a bit longer.

Thanks again!

Sounds like your alternator is dead... the charging system.. he is refering too is the alternator.. which powers your car... durring operation... get that looked at.. or just buy a new one.. they are only like 90 bucks.. and not that hard to install.. just find a good DIY.. there should be one at Pelicanparts.com

Good Luck.. please post back with an answer if/when you figure it out.. thanks

and Good Luck

Les

Yeah I'm thinkign alternator aswell. Did you say your mechanic already fixed the alternator or he just checked it otu or what?

Your car should last way up there. My car has already passed 270,000 miles (its an e34) and it's still runnign my original engine and tranny.

I had the same problem with my car once. I looked under the hood and heard an abnormal noise coming from the intake back by the throttle. so i looked and saw that some sort of plug that keeps the flow of air or something of that nature was unplugged and i put it back in and it ran fine. But when it was out the car would stall at lights and ran really rough when at low rpm's. so i would check that
