I have a '86 325es, '95 525i and '97 740il. Now considering buying a '93 325is and have zero experience with the E36. Are there any unusual things to look for with these models? I know about the ZF auto trans being rev'd in park or neutral, what else can be a problem? Also how are the instrument codes retrieved and instruments tested? Thanks!

See if the waterpump is still stock plastic or if it has been changed to metal, those have been known to break. Also alot of parts were made of rubber and plastic on those early models i suggest taking it into a certified bmw mechanic, i know when i took mine in AFTER i bought it i found out my front shocks were leaking, and i needed new rear tranny mounts and a flex disc. By the way i have 93 325is 5spd with 83000 miles on it and i am very satisfied.

The ZF 4HP22 auto trans if it hasn't been rebuilt with newer shaft seal will ruin clutches if rev'd in park or neutral. Think it was used through 1994 3 series. At any rate it's documented on the internet, look up 4HP22 trouble on Google.
